Our Commitment to the

Planet

SUSTAINABILITY

Supporting the Global Goals

In 2015, 193 world leaders agreed on a set of 17 global goals to end extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. These have been established as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and each come with their own targets and indicators.

For ADM Computing, sustainability has been at the forefront of our business objectives since our establishment in 1984. Managing Director, Adrian Bryant, has been a life long advocate for protecting the environment and to this day, the importance of preserving our environment is included in ADM’s vision statement.

ADM proudly joined the “Support the Goals” movement as a corporate member in 2021 to be part of the global objectives to make a better world.

ADM Computing as a medium sized IT company in Canterbury cannot change the world. We recognise that; however the combined effort of lots of organisations and people like us can make a difference. We hope our experience of being part of this movement might encourage others do something similar.

The key aims of the initiative are to :

  • Raise awareness of the Global Goals in the business community
  • Promote a structured approach to planning, target setting, and reporting in respect of the goals
  • Give young people work experience in corporate sustainability, so they understand how business can contribute to a better world

Our Pledges

We believe that independent of our business and time challenges, it is our responsibility to give back to our community and our planet. ADM is pledging its profit and time to support the community and the environment. We have mapped our sustainability strategy to six of the global goals where we think we can make a difference and have chosen to focus our efforts towards supporting Goal 1 – No Poverty, Goal 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing, Goal 4 – Quality Education, Goal 5 – Gender Equality, Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption & Production and Goal 13 – Climate Action.

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.

GOAL_1_TARGET_1.4

Our Targets

As an organisation that operates predominately within the South-East of England, the goal to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere” may seem unrealistic. Although these goals were initially defined with governments and countries in mind, not businesses, this does not mean we as businesses are incapable of making a lasting impact and working towards this goal collectively. By working with organisations like Tools With a Mission and Practical Action, ADM have donated countless PCs, laptops, solar panels as well as two off road vehicles and over £10,000 to help developing villages support their own education systems.

Measurable Commitments

Market garden in the Gambia

The project started in 2006 when we sponsored a well in the village of Lamin Jawara Gambia. With their new water supply the villagers were able to establish a market garden. When the local wildlife started munching on the produce we donated money. The money had a direct and immediate use to buy protective fencing. ADM staff were invited to the village and saw where the money went. The well exists, the fence is still there, it has a direct and immediate impact on the lives of people in the village.

Schools in Africa

ADM have been able to support schools in Africa by supplying computers, stationary and solar panels.

As a tech company ADM Computing were able to access pre used technology that while not cutting edge by the standards of UK business was good enough to help people learn.

One of the main causes of poverty in developing countries is the large proportion of the population that is not fully involved in education. High poverty rates and inadequate infrastructure, especially in rural areas mean accessing education is difficult.

By improving the quality of school education and student access key resources like computers, the ideal conditions are created for the development of cognitive competence.

Working with established charities

Through the following organisations, ADM has been able to provide additional support to those living in poverty around the world.

Practical Action – An innovative international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.

Oxfam – A global movement of millions of people who share the belief that, in a world rich in resources, poverty isn’t inevitable.

ODAFEM – A charity in Ivory Coast which supports women and children in rural areas

Tools With a Mission – A charity that collects unwanted usable tools, refurbishes them, sorts them into trade tool kits and sends them to the developing world for livelihood creation.

Measurable Targets

Measure, target and raise awareness of existing commitments

Although ADM have been donating devices and general equipment to worthy causes for years, we have never truly measured or targeted ourselves against these initiatives. In 2022, we began to track our commitments, and have used this information to set an annual company target to support at least 18 unique charitable causes per year.

Donate 1,000 devices to developing areas by 2030

Although ADM have been donating devices and general equipment to worthy causes for years, we haven’t tracked our contributions or targeted ourselves against these initiatives. In 2022, we began to track our commitments and have used this information to set a company target of donating 1,000 devices to these causes between 2022 and 2030, creating learning opportunities and fostering sunstainable development.

Support The Goals – Goal 3 targets

Our Targets

Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health.

ADM’s goal is to help reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases and promote good mental health, and prevent and treat substance abuse.

By making resources readily available to staff and promoting good mental health & wellbeing within the workplace, ADM were awarded the Bronze, Silver & Gold status for the Kent & Medway Mental Health & Workplace Wellbeing program in 2021, followed by achieving the Platinum status in 2022. We were also announced as winner of the Kent mental health and wellbeing awards in 2021, presented by South Kent Mind.

Since achieving these milestones internally, ADM have gone on to sponsor the Kent Mental Wellbeing Awards in the years that followed, and host free accessible wellbeing webinars for our network – acting as ambassadors within the community.

Measurable Commitments

Raising public awareness about mental health

We partnered with Medway Council to deliver a webinar to local businesses, raising awareness of the importance of staff’s wellbeing, how to support employees, and ultimately improve wellbeing in the workplace.

Mental Health First Aider

ADM currently have 3 certified mental health first aiders. MHFA is a point of contact for an employee who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. They are trained to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill-health and provide help on a first aid basis.

Mental health promotion training programme

ADM provide a mental health promotion training programme for managers and directors. If we can assist in maintaining the health of our own staff and to some extent their wider connections we are hopefully reducing the burden on the wider community. We encourage staff and colleagues to work to take responsibility for their actions but not take the blame when things go wrong, which occasionally they inevitably will.

Support available for staff in seeking help for alcohol or substance misuse issues, stop smoking services

All ADM staff have free 24/7 access to a range of resources and support should they find themselves struggling with alcohol or substance abuse. This includes free help lines with trained professionals.

Charity fundraising events for non-profit organisations

We participate in charity fundraising events for non-profit organisations that look to improve mental and physical wellbeing around the world, like: Mind, Macmillian Cancer Support, Teenage Cancer Trust, Sands(Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Red Nose Day, etc.

Our efforts have been recognised by our community

ADM has achieved Kent & Medway Workplace Wellbeing Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum Awards, and also won the Kent mental health & wellbeing awards (presented by South Kent Mind) in 2021.

Regular staff meetings, social events

ADM’s internal wellbeing meetings and frequent social events, such as walks and family friendly afternoons out, help contribute to a healthy lifestyle amongst staff.

Measurable Targets

Community engagement

Making an impact beyond our immediate workplace is important to ADM. Our mission is to actively engage and support our community in creating an environment where mental and physical health are prioritised, ensuring a better quality of life for everyone. We aim to achieve this through the promotion and sponsorship of wellbeing intiatives throughout Kent, as well as partnering with wellbeing organisations to offer webinars for our network of growing businesses, enhancing the accessibiity of crucial resources and supporting our communities journey towards better wellbeing for all.

Staff happiness and wellbeing

We are committed to maintaining a workplace where staff happiness and wellbeing are prioritised. Our goal is to foster an environment that not only supports but enhances the overall quality of life for all our employees. ADM are commited to measuring and continuously improving staff happiness and satisfaction levels, both within the workplace and their personal lives.

Wellbeing Awareness Sessions

Each year, we will host two webinars to promote good health and well-being within our workplace and the wider society. One session will be provided internally for our staff, while the second will be promoted to our customers and contacts within our broader network.

Neurodiversity Training

By 2025, we will conduct neurodiversity training within our workforce to equip ourselves with the skills to collaborate effectively with diverse working styles. This initiative aims to foster an inclusive environment where every individual’s unique strengths are recognised and utilised, enhancing our team’s overall productivity and cohesion.

TheGlobalGoals_Icons_Color_Goal_4

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Education liberates the intellect, unlocks the imagination and is fundamental for self-respect. It is the key to prosperity and opens a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society. Learning benefits every human being and should be available to all.

GOAL_4_TARGET_4.4

Our Target

Education is one of the most important factors in a society concerning the development of human capital and the well-being of the inhabitants of each region.

By engaging in fantastic projects around the world, ADM hope to help increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success regardless of background. We hope to achieve this by providing greater access to learning opportunites, and improving access to key resources that directly correlate to employability in this evolving world.

Measurable Commitments

Laptop, PC donations

As an IT company ADM have often have access to hundreds of laptops and PCs. Many of these are no longer required by our business or that of our clients. Once all of the necessary data cleansing and security steps have been taken these machines find a new home in the developing world where they are used to access education.

Charities we work with include; TWAM (Tools With a Mission) and Learning Link Ghana. ADM Projects Director Martin Tanner has been a trustee of Learning Link Ghana since 2016. Martin has regularly been invited to inspect, supervise and assist with the distribution of equipment in Ghana.

ADM have  access to an all-terrain vehicle which is used to distribute equipment and essential supplies to the projects we are involved in.

Schools in Africa

We’ve been supporting schools in Africa through the years by supplying computers, computing equipment and solar panels. We work together closely with Focus Project UK, who focus mainly on supporting Primary Education in The Gambia with learning resources like books, computers, school furniture, school meals and funding to improve the conditions of school facilities.

Internal Training

At ADM, we place significant emphasis on staff training and development. We believe that continuous investment in our team is essential for both personal growth and the success of our business. The majority of our engineers joined us as apprentices, and through our comprehensive training programs, they have continually developed their skills and expertise.

To ensure our team remains at the forefront of technological advancements, we provide a minimum of one dedicated training day each month for all our engineers. Additionally, we offer extra training sessions on Wednesdays, known as Wednesday Evening Training Sessions (WETS), which are optional but highly encouraged. These sessions are led by our senior engineers and cover a wide range of topics, from the latest industry trends to advanced technical skills.

Measurable Targets

Donate 1,000 devices to developing areas by 2030

Although ADM have been donating devices and general equipment to worthy causes for years, we haven’t tracked our contributions or targeted ourselves against these initiatives. In 2022, we began to track our commitments and have used this information to set a company target of donating 1,000 devices to these causes between 2022 and 2030, creating learning opportunities and fostering sunstainable development.

Gender Equality SDGS

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us. It is not just a human rights issue; it is a tremendous waste of the world’s human potential. By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life at its fullest. Political, economic and social equality for women will benefit all the world’s citizens. Together we can eradicate prejudice and work for equal rights and respect for all.

Gender Equality target

Our Targets

At ADM, we recognise the pivotal role of technology in advancing gender equality. By increasing the representation of women in the tech field, we strive to create an inclusive environment that not only fosters innovation but also promotes equal opportunities. We are actively involved in initiatives that encourage and support women’s involvement in technology, providing them with the necessary skills and access to resources that catalyse their success in this rapidly evolving sector. Through these efforts, ADM aims to contribute significantly to the empowerment of women globally, ensuring they have equal chances to thrive and lead in the realm of technology.

Measurable Commitments

Working with local schools and colleges

At ADM, we are dedicated to changing the narrative around women in technology. We actively collaborate with local schools and colleges to inspire and empower young girls, encouraging them to explore the tech sector from an early age. Our initiatives aim to counter the historical discouragement girls often face and highlight their immense potential and capability in this field. By providing early exposure to technology and showcasing successful female role models, we strive to open up new possibilities and foster a more inclusive tech community for future generations.

Working with similarly minded technology companies around the UK

We believe in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change. We are actively partnering with other organisations within our network, many of which are similarly minded tech companies, to share ideas and work towards a common goal: increasing the representation of women in technology. Together, we exchange best practices, develop inclusive strategies, and create opportunities that empower women to excel in the tech industry. By uniting our efforts, we aim to build a more diverse and equitable tech landscape, ensuring that women are well-represented and thriving in this dynamic sector.

Measurable Targets

Increase representation of women in technical roles at ADM

At ADM, we are committed to shaping a more inclusive future, setting a target for one in three new hires to be female. This goal is part of our broader commitment to empowering women through technology, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5b. To enhance our efforts, we are actively engaging with like-minded businesses within our sector, sharing and adopting best practices that support gender equality and amplify the impact of our initiatives.

Engagement with local schools and colleges

Between 2024 and 2026, female role models at ADM will attend at least 6 school, college, or university events, such as career fairs, to encourage more women to enter the technology sector.

TheGlobalGoals_Icons_Color_Goal_12

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Our planet has provided us with an abundance of natural resources. But we have not utilized them responsibly and currently consume far beyond what our planet can provide. We must learn how to use and produce in sustainable ways that will reverse the harm that we have inflicted on the planet.

Support The Goals – goal 12 targets

Our Targets

As an environmentally conscious business, sustainable consumption and waste management has always been a strong focus of ours. By partnering with local initiatives, and assessing the way we generate, manage and consume resources, we have been able to make a lasting difference to our impact on the planet.

Measurable Commitments

Better waste management

We shifted to a more local waste & recycling provider in 2019, in an effort to reduce the amount of waste that doesn’t get recycled.

ISO 14001 certified

ADM have been ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certified since 2014.

Charity fundraising events for non-profit organisations

We hold charity football games annually with our vendor Altaro and raise funds for ‘Friends of the Earth’

Electrical Waste Management

It’s no surprise that as an IT support and services company, we often receive requests from our clients to collect old devices such as laptops, PCs and monitors. Wherever possible, we like to wipe these devices inhouse, clean them, and send them off to charities around the world for livelihood creation. When a device is not suitable for charity, we utilise ICT Reverse  – an asset management organisation with a zero landfill tolerance policy. ICT Reverse ensure that all devices are reused, remanufactured, remarketed or recycled in line with the waste hierachy.

ADM Solar

In 2012 we decided to take things one step further than most businesses, and setup ADM Solar – a side project of Managing Director, Adrian Bryant, which aimed to raise awareness of the attractive government grants available to businesses looking to adopt solar panels. Over the 2 years ADM Solar was active, it saw the installation of solar panels throughout the South-East of England, starting with our very own offices. We were even able to send out some solar panels to The Gambia as part of our ongoing efforts there.

Although ADM Solar is no longer active – we are proud of the impact we had on businesses within our community, and the lasting effect the panels installed will have on the environment.

Remanufactured devices

ADM partner with RDUK to ensure we can provide high quality refurbished devices to business that desire them. This not only helps cut down on waste and helps businesses along their own sustainability journeys – but can also help reduce costs for organisations whose devices may suffer from above average wear and tear, such as schools.

Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme

ADM is proud to announce our partnership with Octopus Energy to offer a new benefit for our employees – an Electric Vehicle (EV) Salary Sacrifice Scheme. This initiative allows all our staff members to lease electric vehicles through a cost-effective salary sacrifice arrangement, making the transition to greener, more sustainable transportation accessible and affordable.

Measurable Targets

Measure and track our carbon footprint

The term carbon footprint is one we are all familiar with – but do you know what your organisations carbon footprint actually is? In 2024, we partnered with TBL Services with the objective to identify and measure ADMs carbon footprint, a necessity if looking to target ourselves with becoming an entirely carbon neutral organisation.

By the end of 2024, we will have measured our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

By the end of 2025, we will have measured our Scope 3 emissions.

sdgs 13

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilisation. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet. These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernise our infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.

GOAL_13_TARGET_13.3

Our Targets

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal to enhance education and awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding and proactive behavior towards environmental sustainability within our workplace and across our network.

We are actively involved in initiatives that educate and empower our employees and partners to take meaningful action against climate change. By integrating climate education into our corporate culture, we aim to equip our team with the knowledge and tools necessary to contribute to climate resilience. Furthermore, we collaborate with other organisations to share best practices and innovative solutions that can lead to substantial impact reduction.

Measurable Commitments

Green School Awards

The Green School Awards is a program that’s open to primary and secondary schools across the South-East. It celebrates best practice in six categories: green travel and road safety; energy conservation; nature conservation; health and well-being; recycling; and air pollution. Click here to see more.

Adrian-Bryant-ADM-Computing
Forest Schools

Inspired by what he had seen in China ADM’s MD Adrian invested in a business and we developed our own level 3 OCN certified training program in China, helps train kindergarten teachers in Forest schools to create better environmental awareness. Much has been written about pollution being an issue in China, and ADM, a medium sized IT company in Kent cannot impact geo politics. But what we can do was help those who were trying to make changes early on in that area. There is better environmental awareness and in part this is thanks to schemes like the Forest schools. It also serves as a way of encouraging creative thinking in young students whilst they learn important life skills.

Through our level 3 OCN certified training program, we have been able to train and develop over 2,000 certified teachers and trainers in the UK and China.

Increasing awareness within the community

By partnering with TBL Services, we have taken a proactive step to deepen our understanding and influence positive change within our community.

Together with TBL Services, we have hosted a series of webinars designed to educate both our staff and our network of businesses —comprising of customers and non-customers alike—on the environmental impacts of their operations. These sessions not only highlight the critical nature of sustainable practices but also provide practical guidance on how businesses and individuals can implement effective strategies to reduce their ecological footprint.

Paid staff volunteering days

At ADM, we are committed to fostering a culture of generosity and civic engagement. We empower our staff by offering every employee one paid volunteering day each year, during regular working hours, to support a cause that is meaningful to them. This initiative allows our team members to give back to the community, through environmental efforts, community outreach, or supporting a cherished charity.

Recognising that some staff may not have the time or resources to organise a volunteering day on their own, we also coordinate group volunteering events. These organised outings provide a structured opportunity for team members to participate in community service, ensuring everyone has the chance to contribute, regardless of their personal circumstances. By offering these options, we aim to encourage a spirit of community and personal involvement in causes that enrich our society and environment.

Measurable Targets

Register with Ecologi and support climate change initiatives equal to 100% of staff carbon footprints

One of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by helping support climate projects around the world. Ecologi are an organisation that help make this process easy for individuals and businesses looking to make a difference. Thanks to their public financial figures, in-depth reporting and evidence of project works, as well as their carbon reduction calculations – we feel we can be confident in Ecologi’s guarantee that 85% of all contributions will go directly towards supporting initiatives around the world that are helping combat climate change.

ADM also celebrate our team members’ birthdays in a unique and meaningful way—by planting trees. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to sustainability and is designed to make our environmental efforts more personal and engaging for our staff.

By 2025, ADM aims to fund carbon action projects equal to 100% of all staff carbon footprints.

Increase the number of electric vehicles in our fleet to 80% by 2030

Each year, ADM aim to replace one of our existing petrol/diesel vehicles with an environmentally-friendly electric alternative.

By 2030, over 80% of the ADM vehicle fleet will be electric/hybrid.
