Our Talk on AI for the East Kent Chamber of Commerce

Our Talk on AI for the East Kent Chamber of Commerce

Setting the Scene

Last week, I was given an incredible opportunity. I was invited to present for the East Kent Chamber of Commerce, a platform that has always fostered knowledge exchange and networking among professionals. My agenda? To dive into the constantly evolving cyber threat landscape, a domain that has gained immense importance in recent years.

Leading up to the event I was contacted by Irfan (of Cripps Solicitors) who would be presenting with me on the day. I was cautious at first as the legal industry typically have to deal with the risks associated with new technological development, however Irfan was brilliant, very helpful, reveled in the excitement of technology with me and provided an excellent counterpart to my talk.

I was very glad to hear the venue was Chapel House Estate in Ramsgate, as it is truly one of Kent’s hidden gems. From the moment we arrived, the grandeur of the venue was evident. Greeted warmly by the team upon entry, it wasn’t long before the contemporary but elegant Thorne Barn became filled with the sound of professionals engaging in vibrant discussions, sharing anecdotes, and networking. Just when I thought the experience couldn’t get any better, we were ushered to our tables where a delicious cooked English breakfast awaited us. The combination of the beautiful setting and the delicious food set the perfect tone for the enlightening discussions and presentations that followed. Chapel House Estate wasn’t just a venue; it was an integral part of the event’s success.

The atmosphere was electric, with professionals from various sectors eager to understand more about cybersecurity, especially in light of the rapid advancements (and concerns) in AI.

The Presentation

I opened with the marvels that some of the new tools offer. Microsoft Copilot, for instance, aids productivity and creativity by suggesting amendments, creating presentations, generating graphs and tables from vast amounts of data and generally making everyday tasks more efficient. It also has a brilliant counterpart called Microsoft Defender Copilot which can help condense and explore cyber vulnerabilities and active threats.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT, as many of you might already know, can generate human-like text based on the prompts it receives. Such advancements, I pointed out, are not just about convenience, but more redefining the way we operate, innovate, and grow, potentially spearheading a revolutionary shift in how businesses function.

But, like every coin has two sides, these AI-driven tools are a double-edged sword. The flip side? The new potential vulnerabilities they introduce.

As I navigated the audience through the intricacies of these vulnerabilities, the room was palpable with interest. With every functionality that AI brings to the table, there exists a window of opportunity for malicious actors. Cyber threats are no longer just about someone sitting behind a screen trying to hack into a system; they’ve become sophisticated operations that exploit every opportunity they can.

The conversation took a deeper turn as we discussed how businesses, while embracing the power of AI, need to concurrently fortify their cyber defenses. It’s not just about recognizing the immense capabilities AI offers but also understanding the inherent challenges. It’s this duality of embracing the power and being cautious of the vulnerabilities that will define the future of cybersecurity.

As I concluded my session, the numerous questions and discussions that followed were a testament to the significance of the topic. It was evident that businesses are ready to harness the power of AI, but they also realize the critical importance of staying vigilant in this ever-changing realm of cybersecurity.

Final Takeaways

Looking back, my time at the East Kent Chamber of Commerce wasn’t just about sharing knowledge; it was a two-way exchange where I learned just as much from the engaging audience. It reinforced my belief that as we progress into an AI-driven world, collective awareness and collaboration are our best defenses against the lurking threats in the shadows.
